Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President Hal Rodgers, September 10, 2008, at 3:32 pm at the Santa Cruz Bridge Center.

 

Present:  Jeanne Boss, John Hadley, Hal Rodgers, Don Seldeen, Bonnie Simon Absent:  Carol Maggipinto and Charlie Pender

Also attending: Sherry Gilbreath, Bill McIntosh, Nancy Wainer and Wayne Boss

 

Approval of August Minutes – Don Seldeen moved to accept the minutes of the August 13 & 20, 2008 board meetings. Seconded by Bonnie Simon.  Approved unanimously.

 

President’s Report:

2009 299’r “Rising Stars” Sectional  – Jeanne Boss provided a handout comparing information on several possible sites for the March 14 and 15, 2009 299’r Sectional.  The Masonic Temple in Santa Cruz offered the best price and comparable facilities to the other sites and was selected by the board as the site for next year’s 299r sectional.  Moved by Don Seldeen, seconded by John Hadley, approved unanimously.

Bonnie Simon agreed to co-chair the event with Jane Jennings.

Unit Member Announcements – Nancy Driscoll has asked to place a flyer promoting the bridge lessons she is giving in her home.  The Unit Members’ bulletin in the hallway will be cleared of outdated photos and announcements to make room for bridge related announcements by unit members.

Expense Sharing Agreement - The board discussed the expense sharing agreement.  Concerns have been narrowed down to two issues: 1.) usage fee,  and 2.) water and garbage fees be included in operating expenses paid by club owners. Hal Rodgers will contact a club owner to discuss these issues.

 

Old Business

2008 “Surf’s Up” Open Sectional -  The board, by consensus, did not approve a request by the game director for an additional night’s hotel stay.

 

Treasurer’s report – It was moved by John Hadley and seconded by Hal Rodgers to approve the Treasurer’s report for August 2008.

 

New Business

Team play vs Monterey Bridge Club Don Seldeen reported that he has been talking with players in Monterey about doing a Swiss Team game  - Santa Cruz Bridge Center vs Monterey Bridge Club.  The board encouraged him to continue his discussion and see about some dates.

District 21 Board Meeting - Bill McIntosh attended the recent District Board meeting and reported the following:  1.) All hands for future open pairs regional tournaments will be pre-dealt; 2.)  All clubs in district 21 had to get an employer identification card for tax purposes, except Santa Cruz because this bridge center is already incorporated; 3.) Reno and Carson City, Nevada are now members of District 21.  Grass Valley, California may join soon; 4.)There were 250 tables at the recent Santa Clara Regional; 5.)  The Monterey Regional is scheduled for early January 2009.

Subsidy for beginner game – In keeping with the Unit’s commitment to support the programs to recruit new players to the game, the board approved paying 25% ($76.25) of the total cost ($305) for advertising in the Santa Cruz Sentinel (August 29 and September 12, 2008) promoting beginner lessons by Nancy Wainer. Moved by Don Seldeen, seconded by Bonnie Simon and passed unanimously.

 

 

Committee Reports

299’r Coordinator  Nancy Wainer has volunteered to chair this committee until the end of the year.

By-Laws – Don Seldeen, no report

Club Owners Liaison – Bonnie Simon, no report.

Education Liaison – Nancy’s Bridge Camp continues with good attendance.  She will be teaching a two week “2 Over 1” class in September. Requested reimbursement for advertising of bridge lessons.

Facilities – Charlie Pender, absent, no report.   Nancy Wainer requested that something be done about outside lights that are not working as this is dangerous for people leaving the evening games.  John Hadley volunteered to take care of this.

Finance – Ken Llacera, absent no report

Hospitality – Cake and Champagne will be served at the annual Dolores Abrams Memorial Unit game in September.

Membership – Carol Maggipinto, absent, no report

Publicity – Bonnie Simon, no report

Sanctions – Hal Rogers reported that he has received the October 4, 2008  North American Pairs Sanction.  There will be two sessions, 10:00 and TBA.  Bill McIntosh reported that it is not necessary to be qualified to play

Special Projects – John Hadley, no report

Webmaster – Ken Llacera, absent no report
